Biography

Alba Eiragi Duarte Portillo was born in 1960 in Curuguaty, Paraguay. She is a descendant of the Aché people  and of the Avá-Guarani people. She grew up in the Avá-Guaraní community of Colonia Foturna, in the department of Canindeyú, of which she is now one of the leaders.


She has a BA Social Sciences and in Communication and is specialized in Intercultural Education. Since 1998, she works as a teacher in the indigenous community being one of the translators of the educational material for Guaraní. She worked with indigenous street children, as guided by the organization “Kuña Guaraní Aty” in Paraguay and is the General Coordinator of the indigenous singing group “Kuña Reko Yvoty”.


In 2016, she published her first book Ñe'ê yvoty. Ñe'ê poty (Word in Flower), a collection of poems, followed by a book of short stories in 2019, Ayvu tee avá guaraní (The Original Language of Avá Guaraní).


She became a member of the Society of Writers of Paraguay (SEP) in 2017, being the first Native American writer.
